El Equilibrista

Treat each day as if it is your last.

Professor Erasmus Cromwell-Smith has a secret. Two, actually.

The first: the beloved, rumpled poetry professor — the one who pedals his rusty old bicycle through the New England snow — has just been told he is dying.

The second: for fifty-four years, he has guarded a treasure. Now, before time runs out, he has resolved to give it away — one class at a time.

Week after week, his lectures swell from a small classroom to an overflowing auditorium as he carries his students back to Hay-on-Wye, the Welsh town of books, where three eccentric antique book dealers — an equilibrist, a sorceress, and a war hero — armed a wide-eyed boy, poem by poem and scroll by scroll, with everything a human being needs to be happy: courage, hope, resilience, magic... and the luminous formula that binds them all together — the Happiness Triangle.

But hidden inside the lessons is a love story. Her name was Victoria. She vanished without a goodbye four decades ago, and he never loved again.

And in the front row, arriving early every single week, sits a young woman with long golden curls who is slowly realizing that the professor’s story sounds impossibly — heart-stoppingly — familiar...

A dying man’s final class. Three unforgettable mentors. Thirty-two poems. One lost love. And a last session that no one in that auditorium — least of all the professor himself — will ever forget.

Dead Poets Society meets Tuesdays with Morrie in Volume 1 of The Equilibrist series: a tale of mentorship, second chances, and the kind of true love that finds you when you have long stopped looking — because, as the old master teaches, “true love is when your heart does not belong to you.”

I am right here, my love.

Forty years after she vanished without a goodbye, Victoria came back. Now what?

Professor Erasmus Cromwell-Smith — the beloved, absent-minded poet of the Royal Cambridge Scholastic Institute — has survived a death sentence and been handed the miracle he stopped daring to dream of: a second chance with the love of his life. But second chances come haunted. She carries forty years of guilt for leaving; he wakes at night terrified she’ll vanish again.

So, once more, the old professor tears up the curriculum.

Week after week, before an auditorium packed to the rafters, he carries his students back to Harvard, 1976 — to love notes and little gestures, a broken baton replaced overnight, a first kiss on Martha’s Vineyard — and to the eccentric antiquarians of New England who took the young couple under their wing: a thunder-laughed widow of the sea, a towering Francophile, an ex-banker with a vault full of ancient books, a riddler who answers every question with a question, a Scottish heir to a legendary name, and the sternest librarian at Widener. Scroll by scroll, scribble by scribble, they hand down the wisdom of the ages — optimism, faith, gratitude, doubt, duality — all of it leading to the greatest lesson of all: Geniality, the everyday genius waiting inside every one of us, a genie in a bottle ready to be uncorked.

But the story is racing toward the one day the professor has never been able to speak of: December 15, 1977. A train to Cape Cod. A train to Chicago. The most extraordinary gift of his life — and its most devastating loss — arriving in the very same breath.

This time, though, he won’t face it alone. She’s in the audience.

A once-in-a-lifetime love, lived twice. Six unforgettable mentors. Twenty-seven poems of timeless wisdom. And the answer to the question that haunts every heart that ever hesitated: what if it’s not too late?

Volume 2 of The Equilibrist series — the spellbinding sequel to The Happiness Triangle.

Your genie in the bottle is your genius. The genius in you is waiting. What are you waiting for?

Otro rumbo a Chicago.

¿A qué esperas?

Today we will start right where we left off last year. On the night when the love of my life vanished.

For two years, the students of the Royal Cambridge Scholastic Institute have packed the auditorium to hear their beloved poetry professor tell his own life story — his boyhood among the antique bookshops of Wales, his incandescent Harvard romance, the miracle that gave him back both his health and his lost Victoria. But one question has hung over it all, unanswered for forty years:

Why did she leave?

Now, in the final year of the most famous class ever taught, the truth comes out — like a dam opening its floodgates. A mother’s coercion. A midnight flight from a small Illinois town. A husband twenty-eight years her senior who was never what he seemed. And on the other side of those four stolen decades: Erasmus’s own confessions, of the women who couldn’t replace her, of the years of wandering the world’s great libraries — from Tokyo’s scroll dealers to the antiquarians of Venice and Florence — collecting, scribble by scribble, the timeless wisdom he now hands to his students on adversity, forgiveness, defiance, resilience, and serenity.

Because this is not a story about lost time. It is a story about what true love does with it.

As wedding bells ring on a Martha’s Vineyard beach and two families become one, fate readies one last unexpected bend in the road — one that will bring the deepest sorrow of their lives, and, from its ashes, the most extraordinary gift of all: the very voice telling you this story.

Three years. One last class. Thirty-five poems of ancient wisdom. The whole truth, at last — and the secret every life wizard knows: life itself is the fairy tale, and it is ours to write.

The triumphant conclusion of The Equilibrist trilogy, from the author of The Happiness Triangle and Geniality.

Life is a fairy tale that resides inside all of us. It is there to be tapped, regardless of place or circumstances.

Treat each day as if it is your last.

The year the doctors gave Professor Erasmus Cromwell-Smith a death sentence, he made his students a promise: he would tear up the curriculum and teach them, instead, the secrets of a lifetime.

What poured out filled three unforgettable years — and became a legend.

A boyhood in the Welsh town of books, where three eccentric antiquarians armed a lonely child with the wisdom of the ages. A Harvard romance so luminous it produced a lifetime of poems — and a love who vanished without a goodbye. Forty years of separation, spent gathering ancient scrolls and timeless lessons across the libraries of the world. And then, from the top of a packed auditorium, a voice calling his name: “I am right here, my love.”

Gathered here in full — The Happiness Triangle, Geniality, and The Magic in Life — this is the complete saga of Erasmus and Victoria: every class, every mentor, every scribble of verse, from the Happiness Formula to life’s endless virtuous circles. A story of mentorship, second chances, devastating loss, and the joy that rises from its ashes — told by the one voice that owes this love story its very existence.

Some lives teach us how to be happy. This one shows us.

Our blue unicorns in life only exist if we can see them.
