One long argument

What can a person hold, and what must a person let go?

For years, Erasmus Cromwell-Smith II wrote what he believed were three separate books of poetry. Laid side by side, they revealed themselves as one: a single meditation on the things most worth having, precisely because they cannot be owned.

The journey begins within a single life, moves outward into the world, and arrives at the threshold between human wisdom and a mind made of code.

The courage to cross

I

Poetry in Equilibrium

The inward life

The poetry of The Equilibrist: hope, faith, courage, self-reliance, true love, and the balancing pole that keeps a life above the wire.

“The ultimate balance is only attained by the Equilibrist, with the harmonic pole — which is Love.”

The discipline of balance

II

Poetry in Balance

The widening world

The circle expands through the Orloj cities and the first Rebel Hackers: work, weather, teachers, travelers, perseverance, discipline, and the poetry of science fiction.

“Because that’s what we do in life: we juggle and seek to maintain balance.”

The Quibbler and The Street Juggler
A human figure balanced between a celestial clock and an outstretched hand of light
The human architecture

III

Poetry in Symmetry

The complete symmetry

The first two books, complete and unabridged, joined by the later Orlojs, Body of Threshold, and The Silent Tenant: 296 poems and fables in their final architecture.

“Can there be a digital spirit and soul? Is this the next step in the evolution of our species?”

A Digital Spirit and Soul?

The immense value of “now” is why our “present” is a gift. Each tick of the clock is precious and counts.

We are all of us on a wire. The wire is thin and it is narrow, but it is solid, woven from everything that holds a life together: our feelings, our faith, our friends, our family. And no one crosses on skill alone. What steadies the equilibrist is the pole he carries, and the pole is Love.

We are all of us on a wire. The wire is thin and it is narrow, but it is solid, woven from everything that holds a life together: our feelings, our faith, our friends, our family. And no one crosses on skill alone. What steadies the equilibrist is the pole he carries, and the pole is Love.

In four short movements, this book walks that wire from the inside out. The Interior names what happens within one person at three in the morning: hope, doubt, forgiveness, joy. The World gives those ideas bodies and street addresses: a luthier in Mittenwald who fixes a Stradivarius by moving it a fraction of an inch, a street vendor in Portoviejo who saves the life of the man who just humiliated him, a boy in Tromsø who walks up a mountain for six years. The Inheritance carries across the tales of older traditions, retold rather than quoted: a boatwright who saves thirty years of shavings for a lost son, a swordsmith who folds his grief like steel, a confidence man ruined by a fake clock that gave a town the one thing he could never sell. And The Threshold turns the same question toward a mind made of code, and stops where we are actually standing: hand raised, deciding whether to knock.

One question runs through all of it: what can be held, and what cannot. The hour, love, courage, a story. Everything worth having arrives free, to everyone at once, and cannot be hoarded.

Read it where it falls. If a poem here follows you out of the room, the rest of it is waiting.

Poetry in Symmetry

Three books. One question. Six hundred pages of answers.

For years Erasmus Cromwell-Smith II wrote what he believed were three separate books of poetry. Laid side by side, they turned out to be one: a single long argument about what a person can hold and what a person cannot, and the discovery that the things most worth having are exactly the ones that cannot be owned.

Poetry in Symmetry gathers all of it: 296 poems and fables, complete and unabridged. It begins inside a single life, moves outward into the world, journeys through enduring traditions, and arrives at a threshold no generation before ours has faced: asking the oldest questions of the newest kind of mind.

From the equilibrist on his wire to a mind made of code, this is a book about what we can hold, what we must let go of, and why the second list is always the better one.
